Program Funded by Metallica Grant Helping Area Technicians

JULY 23, 2019

In December, Gateway received a $100,000 grant from Metallica’s “All Within My Hands” Foundation. The foundation selected the technical college as one of 10 to be the host site of the inaugural Metallica Scholars program, offering a restructured 8-credit course at a highly-reduced cost to students. The format allows students to take the course at their own pace, according to instructor Randy Reusser, whose course is appropriately titled “Telecom On-Demand."

Reusser said students train for a career in telecom cable installation, and it allows them to complete the certificate program while still working their full- or part-time jobs. Twenty-one students enrolled this summer. The program continues again in September.

“Whatever shift a person works, they should be able to have one-on-one time with instruction,” says Reusser. “The hands-on is very demanding.” Adding “The Metallica Foundation firmly supports what Gateway Technical College is doing to help people transition from jobs to careers.”
