Griselda - Grand Rapids Community College
Meet Griselda, one of our Metallica Scholars from Grand Rapids Community College. Upon arriving in the United States from Mexico, she was eager to learn. Griselda had experience in agriculture but knew she wanted to push herself further as she transitioned to factory employment. Becoming a Metallica Scholar and learning a new skillset was just the opportunity she was looking for.
“Welding is a challenge, but it’s something that will help me in a lot of places — especially factories. That’s what I’m doing right now: working assembly for wire and electrical parts. When I started welding, I couldn’t even make one line. It takes a lot of skill. I don’t learn it at work, I’m learning through [this class]. Now, I’m not too bad.”
Entering a male-dominated field can seem intimidating to many, but Griselda encourages women to follow their dreams.
“Some things can be hard, but if you really want to learn something, you have to find a way.”
