Ryan - Community College of Allegheny County
We celebrate Labor Day by highlighting the importance of early exposure to careers rooted in hard work.
Meet Ryan, a homeschooled student from the South Park area of Pennsylvania who participated in the Metallica Scholars Skilled Trades Academy at Community College of Allegheny County to gain hands-on exposure to a range of skilled trades career pathways. Through the Academy, he sampled all five trades, developing a well-rounded understanding of the skills, expectations, and career opportunities in each field. Thanks to this program, Ryan developed a strong interest in both welding and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training. The program’s hands-on approach allowed him to move beyond abstract notions of potential careers and gain a realistic sense of what day-to-day work in the skilled trades entails.
A highlight of Ryan’s experience was his interaction with instructors, who offered guidance, encouragement, and practical insight into their respective industries. This direct engagement helped Ryan feel welcomed and supported while building confidence in new and unfamiliar learning environments.
