Nebraska's Central Community College is among 32 colleges that have each received $100,000 to award as scholarships - from a most unlikely source.
The famous heavy-metal band Metallica funds scholarships through its philanthropic organization, called "All Within My Hands," in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges.
Metallica have pledged $250,000 (around £207,000) to the humanitarian relief effort following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
More than 41,000 people are known to have been killed in Turkey and Syria since the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey in the early hours of Monday 6th February, and that figure continues to rise.
Metallica’s non-profit foundation All Within My Hands has made a $250,000 donation toward relief efforts following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. In the few days since the natural disaster struck, the death toll has reached more than 41,000 individuals, with thousands more injured and displaced.

Live Music and the Fight Against Hunger
At every tour stop, either All Within My Hands or Metallica have donated a portion of ticket sales to a local food bank or community service organization. In November of both 2018 and 2020, AWMH held its signature benefit: The Helping Hands Concert & Auction. As with all AWMH fundraisers, 100% of proceeds from ticket sales, the auctions, and event merch went directly to the Foundation.

Metallica Scholars and Workforce Education
Following its first two incredibly successful years, the Metallica Scholars Initiative is expanding into 23 community colleges for the 2021-2022 school year! This program is designed to support students training to enter the American workforce. To support these schools and students, AWMH is donating $1.6 Million in funding with the goal of reinvesting in communities that have supported Metallica over the last four decades.

Monthly Auctions for Collectible Memorabilia
On the first Tuesday of every month, AWMH conducts fundraisers typically in the form of auctions, which are now hosted on Givergy! These fundraisers allow fans to bid on unique Metallica experiences and autographed Metallica memorabilia. All proceeds from these fundraisers benefit All Within My Hands and help further the Foundation’s work in the areas of food insecurity, workforce education, and critical local services.
