It may just be a coincidence that machinist Bill Watson, an alumnus of Polk State Corporate College’s Computer Numeric Control (CNC) Machining Program, is a lifelong fan of heavy metal band Metallica. But it is no coincidence that Polk State College has received a $100,000 grant from All Within My Hands Foundation to participate in the Metallica Scholars Initiative.

More students at Grand Rapids Community College will be able to learn skills needed to rock out in their career, thanks to another big investment by a heavy metal band.

ROCKFORD, Mich. — Michigan-based bootmaker, Wolverine, has partnered with Metallica to launch two special edition work boots that will give 100% of the proceeds to benefit skilled trade workers.

Gateway received a $100,000 grant from Metallica’s “All Within My Hands” Foundation. The foundation selected the technical college as one of 10 to be the host site of the inaugural Metallica Scholars program, offering a restructured 8-credit course at a highly-reduced cost to students.

Dubbed the Metallica Scholars Initiative, the band is providing ten community colleges around the country with $100,000 to help develop career paths and improve trade skills. According to the American Association of Community Colleges, which partnered with the band, the funds will directly support more than 1,000 students who collectively will become the first cohort of "Metallica Scholars."

For the second time in six months I am at the L.A. Food Bank with one of the biggest rock bands in the world. This past December I was here with members of the Foo Fighters for a barbeque and benefit to raise money for the food bank.

This time I am here on a Wednesday afternoon with Metallica' bassist Robert Trujillo, who is here as part of the "Day Of Service." He is here with dozens of volunteers, sorting foods, packing bags to feed the hungry.
